Yes, the BBC has packed the daytime TV schedules full of tatt-buying galore such as "Cash in the Attic", "Bargain Hunt" and "Car Booting" but now there is a sensible way for cash strapped parents to turn this generic made-for-TV formula into something workable for their own family life.
Along with Freecycle, where people can offer or request specific items that are given away free, and sites such as Gumtree and eBay that allow anyone to buy and sell anything, another web site has joined the fray.
It's called "Preloved.co.uk". The great thing about this site is that everything is second hand. So, apart from sticking dirty great "buyer beware" warning over each item, it means that people know to check items carefully. From cars to baby clothes to musical instruments, items can be bought and sold from here and sellers can advertise for free, so long as they're members. So, buyers can find things for a fraction of the price to buy new; sellers can make some much needed money by de-cluttering and we, as a nation, can stop taking perfectly usable goods down to the tip.
The more opportunities there are for people to make do and mend, sell on, buy second hand and shun overt consumerism, the greater chance there is that we can all live within our means.
